How Neighborhood Radios Got Started: One Flat Tire, One Big Idea
Our founder, Eduardo “Ed” Silva, was behind the wheel when he noticed another car swerving slightly, clearly unaware that one of its tires was flat. As the vehicle pushed on at high speed, Ed thought, "If only there were a way to tell them in real time!" That’s when a light bulb went off.

It all began on a seemingly ordinary drive down the freeway.
Truckers have used CB radios for decades to look out for each other—warning about accidents, speed traps, road hazards, and more. What if everyday people had something just as simple, just as immediate? What if every car carried a Family Radio Service (FRS) radio—a license-free, affordable, walkie-talkie that anyone could use?
That single thought gave birth to what would become the Neighborhood Radios movement.
Why Now?
As Ed began to think deeper, the idea evolved beyond roadside safety. He saw a bigger picture—a world marked by economic instability, job losses, rising AI disruption, and widespread uncertainty. With automation and self-driving cars on the rise and more people slipping through the cracks, desperation often breeds crime.
Ed realized what many of us are already feeling: we live in times where community and communication are more essential than ever.
“If neighbors had an easy, direct way to communicate with each other—whether for emergencies, safety concerns, or just to check in—we’d all sleep better at night,” Ed says.
That’s why Ed launched Neighborhood Radios—a grassroots, not-for-profit initiative to help communities across the nation build their own local safety nets using FRS radios. It’s a way to rebuild the village in the digital age, one block, one neighborhood, one city at a time.
The Mission
Neighborhood Radios is about people helping people. It's not a business. We don’t sell radios. We simply educate, empower, and connect those who care about their communities.
We offer:
📻 Guidance on how to choose and use FRS radios
🛠️ Resources for starting or joining a local radio-based neighborhood watch
🧠 Best practices for safe and effective communication
❤️ A vision of community that’s rooted in connection, not fear
We’ve even included an optional Amazon affiliate button for those who want to support our efforts while buying a radio. But if you prefer not to use it, we also provide a non-affiliate link. It’s your choice—because this initiative is for the people, by the people.
Who Is Ed Silva?
Eduardo Silva isn’t just an idea guy—he’s a problem solver, innovator, and lifelong learner with a deep background in engineering, automation, and community service.
With two degrees in Electronics and Automation Engineering from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Ed has over 20 years of experience in solving complex technical challenges. From fixing light rail trains to building full-scale digital systems that streamline maintenance and logistics, Ed has always used his skills to create practical, people-centered solutions.
He’s also an educator, having taught at the Facultad de Ciencias Químicas at UANL, and a writer, having penned tech and personal development columns for the Newspaper El Nuevo Georgia. His journey through the gig economy (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash), web development, and now artificial intelligence has given him a unique, grounded perspective on today’s real-world challenges.
Ed even built several AI assistants to help people in different areas of life—completely free and open to all. That same desire to empower individuals drives the Neighborhood Radios movement.
One Person at a Time
Ed knew from the beginning that change wouldn't come from the top down. It starts with you. A neighbor. A traveler. A parent. A concerned citizen.
The idea is simple:
If each neighborhood had a handful of residents equipped with FRS radios, we could build a grassroots, decentralized communication network across the country—one that doesn’t rely on cell towers, power grids, or the internet.
Imagine being able to:
Alert your block of suspicious activity
Check in on an elderly neighbor after a storm
Coordinate during a power outage
Help a stranded driver
Or just say “Good morning” on your neighborhood’s shared channel
